June was a packed and energetic meeting for the Northern Virginia LEGO User Group (NOVA-LUG), as members prepared for a busy summer of displays, collaborations, and events. From major layout planning for BrickFair Chantilly to exciting new community builds and activities, this meeting set the tone for an ambitious season ahead.

Display Updates and Upcoming Events

With multiple public displays in motion, June brought several important updates:

  • Brickmania (June/July): While the full layout isn’t installed yet, select elements from the Fantasy collaboration made an early appearance ahead of BrickFair.
  • Potomac Mills Cubby: A transition is underway as Anthony wraps up his display. A Fantasy-themed chess set by Josh O. will be installed next.
  • Montgomery Mall Pride Display: Running through the end of June, this colorful and inclusive installation—coordinated by Trevor—is now live and receiving great visibility.
  • Dolley Madison Library (June 2025): Taylor coordinated collecting builds at the meeting for installation at the library that afternoon.
  • Claude Moore “Play All Day” (June 20): Final logistics are underway, including play brick and tablecloth handoff.
  • BrickFair Chantilly: Planning continues with Charlie, Brent, and James leading layout coordination. Members discussed setup details and potential LUG-Fest advertising during private days.
  • Marine Corps Museum (September 6): Early planning is underway—members are encouraged to sign up via Discord.
  • Air & Scare Event: Ralph has stepped up to coordinate (thank you!), with more details to come.

Collaboration Updates and Community Builds

  • Tidal Basin / Cherry Blossoms: Planned for display at BrickFair Chantilly & Annapolis Brick Universe.
  • Fantasy Collaboration: Builders met to test-fit sections for Chantilly and align terrain, elevations, and transitions between builds.
  • Cobra Island: Planning continues, with Joshua leading Chantilly layout coordination.
  • Monster Trucks Challenge: Members are gearing up to build custom vehicles (16x16 footprint max). Coordinated by Anthony, a final go/no-go decision was discussed, with strong interest in continuing for BrickFair.
  • “Wicked” Display Collaboration: Teams are forming quickly, with strong participation across the group though actual coordination adn building not set to begin until after BrickFair as this is expected to be a major multi-team effort including:
    • Microscale Map led by Brent E.

    • Shiz University coordinated by Chelsea C.

    • Emerald City led by Joshua H.

Presentations and Planning

  • A B&O Railroad presentation by Ben R. gave insight into a detailed and historically inspired build.
  • MatthewVB shared updates on LUG-Fest (October 4 at George Mason University), including early discussions around printed bricks and event swag.

Monthly MOC Challenge Highlights

May’s Movie Habitats (8x8 scale) challenge brought a creative mix of film-inspired builds, showcasing clever part usage and storytelling in a compact format. WINNER

Looking ahead, the June MOC Challenge is all about Mini Domes, encouraging members to experiment with curved structures, symmetry, and creative enclosure techniques.

Activities and Community Fun

June also brought some hands-on fun inkling playing build in a bag, Polybag Challenge encouraging quick builds and friendly competition.

With summer events ramping up and BrickFair Chantilly just around the corner, NOVA-LUG is firing on all cylinders. June’s meeting highlighted the group’s collaborative spirit, creativity, and enthusiasm—setting the stage for an exciting few months ahead.
