Every summer, BrickFair Virginia is circled in bold red on our calendars. It’s not just the biggest LEGO convention in our region—it’s a reunion, a challenge, and a celebration of everything our LUG loves about building together.
In 2024, NOVA-LUG turned heads with our most ambitious collaboration yet: the Waterfront Project. Imagine a sprawling 60-foot-long boardwalk, built by 27 different members, stretching with piers, shops, boats, and all the quirky details that make LEGO worlds come alive. From seafood stands and ferris wheels to tiny minifigs enjoying the summer sun, the display was a living, breathing community—just like our club itself.
What makes collaborations like this so special isn’t just the final product, but the process. Months before the convention, members met up to plan standards for sidewalks, docks, and water colors. Builders got creative with their sections, finding ways to weave in personal flair while keeping the whole display seamless. Then, in true LEGO fashion, setup day brought its fair share of laughs, problem-solving, and late-night tweaks. (Pro tip: don’t underestimate how long it takes to line up 60 feet of tiles!)
And it wasn’t just about the big collaboration. Around the corner, our members proudly displayed their monthly MOC challenge builds, sharing the results of a year’s worth of creative prompts. From tiny vignettes to towering structures, each piece showed off a different style and personality. BrickFair is always a chance to see what your friends have been cooking up, and the variety never disappoints.
Of course, the magic of BrickFair goes beyond the bricks. With nearly 1,300 exhibitors from around the world, it’s a chance to swap techniques and hang out with people who get it. Late-night drafts, impromptu games, and the collective “oohs” and “aahs” of the public show days make the five-day event fly by in a blur of excitement.
When the doors finally closed on Sunday evening, we were tired—but also buzzing with ideas for next year. BrickFair Virginia reminds us every time why we build, why we share, and why a LUG is so much more than just a group of hobbyists. It’s a community, a creative engine, and, every now and then, the architect of a 60-foot LEGO boardwalk.
